Senator Feinstein’s proposed Assault Weapons Ban is close to dying in the Senate

On March 19, 2013 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he won’t include Senator Feinstein’s proposed Assault Weapons Ban in firearm-related legislation he plans to introduce to a full Senate vote.  Reid said: “I’m not going to try to put something on the floor that won’t succeed. I want something that will succeed.”

Senator Feinstein could still offer her bill as an amendment to the main bill but would need 60 votes to do so.  Senator Reid said that “using the most optimistic numbers,” there were less than 40 votes for Feinstein’s ban. In response, Senator Feinstein said “I tried my best. My best I guess wasn’t good enough.”
