On March 21, 2013 Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed the following legislation into law:
- Ban on large capacity magazines. Effective July 1, 2013, this law will prohibit the sale, transfer or possession of magazines that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition or more than eight shotgun shells. Magazines that are lawfully possessed before July 1, 2013 will be grandfathered, but cannot be transferred or sold.
- Required background checks. Effective July 1, 2013, background checks will be required for all private sales of firearms. Exception is made for transfers between immediate family members and for transfers of antique firearms.
