May 14, 2014: This week the NJ Senate passed Assembly Bill 2006 which would reduce the maximum magazine capacity in NJ to 10 rounds from its existing limit of 15 rounds.  The Senate, however, amended the bill, so it is headed back to the Assembly for another vote.  The bill substitutes the number 10 in place of the existing number 15 in the definitions of “assault rifle” and “large capacity ammunition magazine,” and includes a limited exception for tubular feeding devices which are only capable of operating with .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.  The Senate amendments changed the effective date from three months after enactment to immediately, and added a 180 day window for owners to dispose of newly banned items or render them inoperable.  The Assembly is expected to vote on the amended version on May 22.
