NY Senate Majority Leader Willing to Revise SAFE Act

May 15, 2015; NY Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-Long Island) recently stated that he is willing to work with his colleagues in an effort to amend two major parts of the NY SAFE Act – the first being restrictions on passing firearms to family members through a will, and second the ban on loading more than seven rounds into a magazine. Although firearm advocates are cautiously optimistic about these prospects, Flanagan acknowledged that it will be a tall task to pass any amendments through the democratically controlled Assembly and Governor Cuomo. Renzulli Law Firm will continue to monitor these developments.

NJ Legislators Considering New Approach to “Smart-Gun” Mandate

May 15, 2015; In 2002, New Jersey legislators passed a bill which established that firearm retailers would be required to sell only firearms equipped with “smart-gun” technology within three years of the technology becoming sufficiently advanced and available to the public. Now, over a decade later, several NJ legislators have realized that the mandate in place has actually had a counterproductive impact on the advancement of putting “smart-guns” in the hands of NJ residents. Among them are Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, who are said to be considering an amendment to the legislation that would drop the mandate on firearm retailers and instead offer consumers economic incentives to purchase the “smart-guns” (once the technology becomes publicly available). A copy of NJ’s “smart-gun” mandate can be found here
