It is being widely reported that President Biden is withdrawing the nomination of David Chipman to be the next Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  Mr. Chipman’s nomination was uniformly opposed by firearms industry members and Second Amendment advocates, and widely supported by gun control groups, such as Brady United, Everytown for Gun Safety and Giffords Law Center.

While the Democratic leadership was pushing hard on his nomination, Chipman failed to gain support from moderate Democrats in the Senate due to his past record as an advocate for stricter gun laws and his failure to disclose certain information to the Senate during the confirmation process.

If Mr. Chipman’s nomination is officially withdrawn, the ATF will remain without a confirmed Director since 2015.  We will continue to monitor the status of leadership at ATF and whether the Biden White House will again nominate a foe to the industry to lead this important agency.
